Treasure Earth™ Challenge

Conscientious Messaging

Do you know?

Housed in data centres around the world, our digital Cloud has a carbon lining. As data is transmitted underground, through air and across oceans, it generates high energy demands at data centres. These high energy demands are met through supplying and burning fossil fuels.

Currently, data usage and infrastructure account for nearly 4% of greenhouse emissions with each internet user generating almost one bathtub of CO2 gas per year. Multiply that by the 4.5 billion internet users worldwide and the total comes close to the volume of greenhouse emissions generated by the airline industry.

Given the urgent state of climate change, we cannot wait for big companies to save our planet. We have to act now.

A fun and fresh way to reduce our carbon emission.

This Treasure Earth™ challenge is all about consuming data with a conscientious heart. Here are 2 ways we can act on to become more conscious about how we are consuming data through our messages.

Quantity of Messages

Be aware of the number of messages you are exchanging in each conversation. Reduce the number of text messages. Avoid sending unnecessary texts. Choose to connect face to face with your network. Not only does this reduce carbon emission, it also helps us build connections and be more succinct in communicating our key points. It’s as the old saying goes, “less is more”.

Length of Messages

Be aware of the length of messages you are sending out. Reduce the length of each message. The shorter the messages, the lesser data is being used. The lesser amount of data used, the lesser fossil fuels are burnt. For example, instead of beating around the bush, go straight to the point you’d like to make.
